A closed space of our own, organized by us for our satisfaction and well-being, will nonetheless always have some unavoidable outside factors which modify it and can reach the point of turning it into something foreign to us.

Although we try to control our space, through what elements make it up and how they are arranged, the possibility will always exist of an intrusion by sound in it, because the outside sound doesn’t respect this physical barrier.

UA window brings together our entire environment in the same plane, not only showing the outside but also the inside when night falls, where we will appear reflected in the glass, combining with the outside. Although we have this weak barrier which separates both of them, sound will always be free to go through it in both directions. This installation will demonstrate that fact.

·

An artificial window, where the glass has been replaced by a monitor allowing us to control the passage of time, is a useful tool for going deeply into this topic.

.

Let’s imagine we are in our house, comfortable, watching the landscape through our window, determined to relax with this vision and every time an annoying sound from outside invades our space, we write it down on a piece of paper. Now let’s imagine we stick this paper on the window and do the same thing for hours, until the moment arrives when the number of papers on the glass limits our vision, so that both the outside landscape and the reflection of our room would disappear under the sound cloud (symbolized by the paper).

The piece is made up of a window which shows us a mountain landscape in a number of different states: sunny, rainy, calm days, days when the clouds never stop passing over our heads, nights of profound darkness and others when the lights reflected in the clouds create an orange ceiling.

These visions, reproduced at high speed, allow us to see the time pass before us, but sound is something more complex to represent in time. This is why these post-its leave testimony of each incident of outside interference in our space, to the point where they are they only thing left, eliminating our relationship with the inside and blocking our interest with the outside.

To the extent that these papers make the field of vision disappear, they create a landscape of sounds, sounds which read, sounds which are created at that moment in our head… a cloud of sounds which flow in our head looking wherever we look, robbing us of our false sensation of control over our surroundings and demonstrating the impossibility of isolation.

.

Our environment always forms part of a greater one and the richness of this one, outside of our control, lies in its unexpected contributions to our closed environment.
